![]() Bilal: 1st Born Second Okay! so we've been waiting patiently since last year, when we turned on BET and saw this skinny dred crooning over that chocolate dark model singing about his "Soul Sista". YES WHO WAS NOT FEELING THAT? Pushed back and pushed back, shrouded in this veil of unknowing what this "Neo Soul" singer would bring about . . . with this 7 CD release . . . Well 7 is actually 17 so YES, you do get your .99 worth. But I must commence - that sorry ass intro was not even right. Come on now! Brothas . . . don't use this line . . . "I am like warm lotion on your back." I'm not even gon put what came after it because, you can't back that up . . . the line is not sexy unless followed by massage . . . and it wasn't. When I was young, I wanted Prince, matured into my present ? D'Angelo was quite nice . . . so if you already vibing those too . . . you'll like Bilal. (Unless, you think he's trying to imitate, you will be a straight hater). Prince, as we ALL know has is own style completely. Some things like his riffs, vocal crescendos and his screams - squeals whatever you call them - man don't nobody do those but Prince. I'm not saying that Bilal is blatant, but trust me Prince fans should like this. D'Angelo, yeah, Bilal has a lot of mellow soul, and who was one of the mainstream connoisseurs of mellow soul? Alright? Who was influenced by Prince?D'Angelo fans you should like this. All the beats are banging straight up. For you beat heads it's some nice tracks on here. Of course, one of the decent tracks is "Reminisce" with Mos Def & Common. And does anybody remember Prince's "Darling Nikki"? Peep out tracks #9 "C'mere" and #17 "Second Child". Can I say electic soul? Overall, the CD is very mellow, you will be in constant head nod. "Sometimes" will hit you, but "Second Child" will make you stop and think, and it so good to here "Soul Sista" again. I was happily shocked with his ode to Roots (reggae)on "Home" but I am still a little shaky on "Sally" which has a twisted rembrandt of Parliament. With the air of this new "Neo Soul" phase, he embodies that quirky non-conformist creeping with consciousness marketed for a commercial success. Finally, Bilal got some serious issues (just joking but he does appear a little out there though!) but it's worth the money. PEACE! Mahogahni |

![]() CLUB FAHRENHEIT 119 North 18th Street, Richmond, VA -- Wed & Thur 10PM - 2AM -- Fri & Sat 10PM - 3AM If it has not been express to you in rumor or hear say Club Fahrenheit offers overcrowded dance floors, over crowded floors in general, a inconsistent dress code, and bouncers that do not have a clue. Not to mention the fact that parts of the floor through some part of the evening will reflect how someone had one drink to many. I realize that the majority of clubs in Richmond are for a crowd of 21 and over, but do you really want to revisit the 12th grade. To many kids trying to act tough which in return brings drama, and the place is entirely to small for an all out brawl. So unless you want to visit a club that parallels TRL, I would avoid Fahrenheit like the plague. Final Thought? NEVER AGAIN (Unless I really have too!) |

![]() Alicia Keys: Songs in A Minor It took me a minute to understand what exactly the title of the cd meant. But from the moment you start listening to it, you completely understand. For those who are unfamiliar with music and terminology-A is one of the first 7 basic notes played on the piano. Minor is actually a "quality" or basically the quality of the note. Quick little lesson, but I digress.... This 20 year old artist blends a sound of classical music made from various instruments with a little hip hop, thuggish style... You can definitely tell she has a style of her own. Her voice, to me, is rather gentle but it ranges the scales as her fingers lead her to the perfect pitch for each song. She has one side to her where she is telling her man "I'm not trying to hear that shit" in her remake of " How Come You Don't Call Me..." and then there is another side to her that sings a soulful tune about "Loving You." She isn't like anyone I have heard before. Plus her gift on that piano is incredible. Had a chance to see it myself at the Power Expo in Richmond, Va July 1st. There is one song that I could do w/out and that is Jane Doe. You will have to email me and let me know what you think about it. |

![]() WAKE OF THE WIND - J. California Cooper "At once tragic and triumphant, this is an epic story that captures with extraordinary authenticity the most important struggle of the last hundred years." Ripped from their homes, best friends Kola and Suwaibu, are taken from Africa and brought to America as slaves. This is tale of their great-great-great-grandchildren, Mordecai (Mor) and Lifee, who reunite their families through marriage and birth. A beautiful tale, chronicling Mor and Lifee's life from a forced marriage, tirals and tribulations of slavery, the growth oftheir families, and the richness of freedom they died with. This is definitely our must read book of the month. Please feel free to make your comments or reviews on the Book Of The Month Don't have it? Never heard of it? Buy It! |

![]() RUSH HOUR 2 It was funny as hell and all you expected. In the beginning I thought they were trying too hard. You know - it's sequel and rarely do they make the success of the first one. But then you got to think back to the first Rush Hour and then you gotta remember you're watching a Chris Tucker film and all he do is: RUN HIS MOUTH! (All the time - I might add). Action scenes start almost immediately (of course -this Jackie Chan!). So you know the best parts of the movie to me is watching Jackie Chan do his thing. You know that there isn't a stunt double, it is all him. It is amazing to watch that guy do what he does. Chris provides the humor as always. But these two together equals funny. They have a real chemistry together. Also introduce some new chick (Zhang Ziyi) to America because she plays a villain and doesn't speak but maybe three words of English. She is a petite little thing but she was laying the smack down on Chris. (Speaking of smack down, the rock is back and is looking as fine as ever. I saw him last week in his first street fight. I'm glad he is back and will be back on the screen in "Scorpion King"). But I digress... back to the movie- there is a secret agent who is undercover but you don't know whether to trust her or kill her. But I can't tell you what happens with that....as far as the plot. Typical plot-good guys, bad guys, money, betrayal: WHO CARES? Really? How many are going for the plot. It is enough to keep you interested. Jackie Chan provides the action and Chris Tucker provides the laugh which makes this Rush Hour 2 a hit in the theatres! Um . . . go 'head, spend your money! ButtaFly |
